Before statehood, heading north out of Norman's Camp, Oklahoma Territory, Verbeck would be the next station. Norman's camp is now known as Norman, and Verbeck is known as Moore.
This blog is about goings on in Norman, Moore, and northern Cleveland County, Oklahoma in general.
I grew up in Moore and went to university in Norman, where I now reside. So this area and its history interest me.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10789817882295434993noreply@blogger.comBlogger72125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8614602976257570188.post-54423970791320064592012-12-05T21:43:00.004-06:002012-12-05T21:43:51.440-06:00Work will start in January on Norman's Main Street bridge SPUI<a href="http://normantranscript.com/local/x520557022/Construction-will-close-lanes-in-coming-months"></a><span class="pub_date" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #111111; display: block; font-family: Baskerville, 'Goudy Old Style', Palatino, 'Book Antiqua', serif; font-size: 1.5em; font-style: italic; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 10px; vertical-align: baseline;">December 5, 2012</span><br />

<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
NORMAN — At the beginning of the new year, the City of Norman can expect to start undergoing some changes.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
City officials expect construction to begin in January on the Main Street interchange and Canadian River bridge. The lowest bid was awarded last month for the construction on the Main Street bridge, which will be completely replaced.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“It only happens every 50 years,” said Shawn O’Leary, director of public works for the city. “It’s pretty significant.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The bid was approved at $29 million and will be a joint venture between two firms which O’Leary said was “unique.” The two firms working on the project will be Manhattan Road and Bridge and Allen Construction.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The structure is currently a cloverleaf interchange but it will be replaced with a single point urban interchange (SPUI). There is only one other SPUI in Oklahoma that has just been finished in recent months on I-40 and Morgan Road in west Oklahoma City.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“It’s safe, it’s efficient, it handles traffic well and it’s actually cheaper,” O’Leary said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Since the bridge has two structures, he said during construction of it they will be able to keep traffic flowing on one structure while the other is being worked on. Of course, that’s not without saying that the construction will be disruptive to interstate travelers and inner city travelers he said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Like any major construction project there will be certain lanes out of service at certain times,” O’Leary said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He said he expects the project to take approximately 18 months.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Canadian River bridge:</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The second project expected to begin in January involves the widening of the Canadian River bridge. It is currently an eight-lane bridge that will be turned into 10 lanes.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The bid for that project was awarded to Sherwood Construction Company at $15 million. O’Leary said this project should be fairly simpler and less disruptive because there are multiple lanes involved.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Essentially we’re just adding one lane on each side of the existing bridges,” he said. “It’s a little simpler in scope but it’s still a major project.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
O’Leary said the proximity of the Main Street project to the Canadian River bridge project is about one mile so the two construction zones will really be merged together into one large construction zone.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“We’re doing everything we can to minimize inconvenience,” he said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The Highway Commission and the City of Norman are working closely with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to try to minimize as much inconvenience as possible he said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
This project will also take approximately 18 months he said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Lindsey construction:</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
While many people may be more concerned about the possible closure of Lindsey Street in the future, O’Leary said they are still about three years out from that portion of the project.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Lindsey will be the last of all the interchanges to be completed,” he said.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
However, since the bridge on Lindsey Street is only one structure, it would be much more feasible to take the whole thing out of service. It wouldn’t be like the Main Street bridge that has two structures, allowing traffic to continue to flow while still under construction.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“That’s one of the challenges ODOT and its design team is facing,” he said. “We’re exploring every opportunity to keep that from happening.”</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
O’Leary said, of course, they wouldn’t like to have the bridge out of service at all because it will affect citizens and merchants of Norman but they are still several months away from making that decision.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-size: 1.25em; font-style: inherit; line-height: 1.25; margin-bottom: 1.5em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

She is listed on the "About Us" page at http://piscesproject.org/?page_id=7. I'll let you all know what she replies.<br /><br />-------<br />Ms. Yoch,<br /><br />I read the article in Abner magazine about the Pisces Project.I write a blog at http://http://nextstopverbeck.blogspot.com/. I have a couple of questions please for you about the article.<br /><br />1) What demonstrable need in the Norman community as a whole would this project address?<br /><br />2) How does that need compare against other needs the City and/or District have at the current time and short-term future?<br /><br />3) The article says there are about 125 children at a time being trained in the Sooner Swim Club. In it you can see a) Robinson Ave in Norman is OK highway 74, and b) the path of the Oklahoma Railway Company (interurban) as opposed to the Santa Fe's track.<br /><br />Something that I think is really neat in this also is the Farm to Market road just to the east of Moore. It's the road running due north from US-77 to US-270 and has "FM" in a diamond with an arrow pointing to it. Is that Sunylane? sooner? Bryant? I almost want to say it's Eastern. Thoughts anyone?Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10789817882295434993noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8614602976257570188.post-5915317853462889642010-02-22T15:17:00.008-06:002010-02-22T16:51:49.010-06:00Oklahoma Railway Co Route ("Interurban") Through Moore And NormanThese are photos I took of reproduction UGSG maps I have.<br /><br><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsFwSpb3EEdcfSqSRMHCMnLbUafNPQG0A-UshXLI36gj5-JkzIQoLLMuw57dzZRGwPGge3dwKBc3uyIMmH_3RMx4AfT-mGhyxJ_GGCEZRje96TOPJOFIrSyhPMY30yiNK_8Er4prbQ-Z5R/s1600-h/HPIM3818.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsFwSpb3EEdcfSqSRMHCMnLbUafNPQG0A-UshXLI36gj5-JkzIQoLLMuw57dzZRGwPGge3dwKBc3uyIMmH_3RMx4AfT-mGhyxJ_GGCEZRje96TOPJOFIrSyhPMY30yiNK_8Er4prbQ-Z5R/s400/HPIM3818.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441183818568367090" /></a><br />Overview of the route between Moore and Norman. To me the path taken by the Interurban looks a lot like the path taken by I-35 to the US-77 junction and then the path taken by US-77 down towards Robinson Ave. Note there's no Lake Draper or Thunderbird.<br /><br><br /><br><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYbpbhFvsOPpjF0oV2CTMh7mpd07k-2aoa6JOtzEG2hAg6nOIE3uZxwx4nqqhCIHgYROPfqOxdPbmzjyu7JJ9TySfNlNn6YvZeGAHMWlaiEeJ9Ay04te72xyseoiwntedB-mbTK-8JycfO/s1600-h/HPIM3815.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYbpbhFvsOPpjF0oV2CTMh7mpd07k-2aoa6JOtzEG2hAg6nOIE3uZxwx4nqqhCIHgYROPfqOxdPbmzjyu7JJ9TySfNlNn6YvZeGAHMWlaiEeJ9Ay04te72xyseoiwntedB-mbTK-8JycfO/s400/HPIM3815.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441180987758102306" /></a><br />Close up of path of Interurban and AT&SF RR through Moore. The dark line at "T.10 N." is S 4th St. The one above it just about the horizontally written word "AND" is N 12th St. And the one below it where the dark line, US-77, makes an S-curve is S 19th St. See the smaller RR line cutting through the left side of Moore? That's the Oklahoma Railway Co line. The path of the Interurban. Note how it's the path of current-day I-35? It's just slightly to the W of Telephone Ave. north of 12th, and about 1/4 mile E of Telephone Ave. by the time it get to S 4th St.<br /><br><br /><br><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQqGLFoB1OhnlZcaVFOmzb5uFOu1ZPZfzMIdIMojCkh3KTNlxPFMQm95uuKPhyphenhyphenJ2XG-AzsHpa4Uxbshg8EJODEnTSo6eZ7z8Af_-PAB3NNl_r76YyAt31ZVDUjxC7UWnCE85neGQpVeIhJ/s1600-h/HPIM3822.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQqGLFoB1OhnlZcaVFOmzb5uFOu1ZPZfzMIdIMojCkh3KTNlxPFMQm95uuKPhyphenhyphenJ2XG-AzsHpa4Uxbshg8EJODEnTSo6eZ7z8Af_-PAB3NNl_r76YyAt31ZVDUjxC7UWnCE85neGQpVeIhJ/s400/HPIM3822.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441181659579682466" /></a><br />Path of Interurban and AT&SF RR just south of Moore. Here a few more things become visible. That Broadway Ave. used to be US-77 becomes obvious, for instance. Again though please follow the route of the Interurban. It stays 1/4 mile e of Telephone Ave for a few miles, between S 34th. and what would be S. 49th (S. 164th and S. 179th in OKC street names) it veers off to the east. S 179th. is Indian Hill Rd in Norman, and that's right before Indian Hill Rd is where I-35 veers east. The school name I have highlighted in yellow is where a school was located at that time. Going further south we see that by Franklin Rd. the path has moved almost all the way to the next section line road east (12th Ave NW in Norman in current terms), and that the AT&SF RR bisects the intersection of 12th Ave NE and Franklin Rd. It is between Indian Hill Rd and Franklin Rd where I-35 heads straight south, but where Flood Ave keeps going diagonal. <br /><br><br /><br><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDP0Z8xO_Ikb_iwG8-w6wO5WriU_aC-8koIhcmsvifMiR8QBzJezTvcjGlIlwqKLj_lLQAr0rfXwbjKTgfJqY4DAGMcgpQKGCBq9yilm1xKQPFSDq_ggL1wGkMHGDu_j8k7S0Sp-8uQSJ3/s1600-h/HPIM3820.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDP0Z8xO_Ikb_iwG8-w6wO5WriU_aC-8koIhcmsvifMiR8QBzJezTvcjGlIlwqKLj_lLQAr0rfXwbjKTgfJqY4DAGMcgpQKGCBq9yilm1xKQPFSDq_ggL1wGkMHGDu_j8k7S0Sp-8uQSJ3/s400/HPIM3820.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441183823363638210" /></a><br />Closeup of Norman showing termination of the Interurban line and continuation of AT&SF RR through Norman. You can see there were a few more runways at Westheimer Field back then. See how Robinson Ave. is OK-74? It comes in from the west, and then turns south on 24th Ave W and goes down to cross the river, with OK-74A a spur off on Lindsey St to go to OU. Look up by North Campus and you see where the AT&SF RR and Interurban lines runs, but if you look closely you can see a spur off to the west Westheimer Airport. It looks like it continues to run alongside the AT&SF RR for a bit more down to just north of Acres St and current day Andrews Park in Norman. If you think about it the RR right-of-way north of Acres seems wider than south of it, no?<br /><br><br /><br><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd3ccMdjDMHm8oacq46b5H6QtGdRjMDroFP39LpdXVz0ctO478LJzwVUJO9O-MPpkpNFaNDJM_tsi_uTzVuUl-ev7z8F3qBA-JE5E1slOmcq0PtpvXRFEZjB0IVvwXBNN7_gxN_EcBWmVP/s1600-h/HPIM3817.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd3ccMdjDMHm8oacq46b5H6QtGdRjMDroFP39LpdXVz0ctO478LJzwVUJO9O-MPpkpNFaNDJM_tsi_uTzVuUl-ev7z8F3qBA-JE5E1slOmcq0PtpvXRFEZjB0IVvwXBNN7_gxN_EcBWmVP/s400/HPIM3817.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441183807894064194" /></a><br />Finally here's info about when the originals of these maps were made.
