I-35 Aesthetics Design

As part of the I-35 widening project there will be a re-do all of the bridges in Norman over I-35, either as new bridges/intersection or as re-work of existing ones, each bridge having its own theme.

US-77 - Prairie
Tecumseh Road - Tecumseh and the Shawnee
Rock Creek Road - Horses in Motion
Robinson Street - Railroad
Main Street - Land Run of 1889
Lindsey Street - University of Oklahoma
SH-9 E - Lake Thunderbird
SH-9 W - Agriculture and the Chickasaw

The City has a page (http://www.normanok.gov/content/i-35-aesthetics-design) up with a ZIP file (~13.5 meg) containing two PDFs showing the design proposals and an email for anyone who wants to comment on the designs.

There are some really cool designs being considered. Really cool. Worth a read.

  1. Very interesting read, Mark. I wonder if this is a pilot or if they're building off of some of the designs they did along the Broadway Extension? How the idea for themes came about..

Can you imagine how much money there would be for some really cool streetscapes if we spent the money for "Horses in Motion" instead on an area where people will actually see it (instead of flying by at 70 mph)?

Btw - just a tip, try a lighter design. The dark is too heavy and makes the blog hard to read, but the content is great so far, Cleveland County certainly deserves a spotlight.

  2. Thanks for the remarks Nick. I'll look into a different design.

Norman a couple of years ago went and re-worked Main and Gray streets through downtown. New light fixtures, sidewalk improvements, re-paving, and water and storm sewer improvements. I'll have to keep that in mind for a future post as I will the finding out what inspired the designs rather than plain concrete walls.

  3. Yeah, the downtown Norman streetscape was great. Streets south of Main though could use some work, and I think something has to be done with Lindsey all the way from OU to I-35. Those are "streetscape priorities" not a freeway that people travel 70 mph on.
